An early question of pronunciation.

Issue- do you pronounce it 'iss-u' or 'ish-u'?

ish-u (assuming it's English pronunciation you're talking about...) :)

Blogger fatmammycat said...

Indeed it was. Do 'mericans pronounce it differently?
That's the way I pronounce it too, but Claire Byrne pronounces it 'iss-u' and it's driving me up the walls (yes it is stupid, but you know how once you notice something you can't un-notice it?)

Blogger Cycles Goff said...

That's the reason she's pronouncing it that way. To be noticed.

She'll be saying 'controvisee' next.

Funny you say that - Lenihan was bugging me during the budget (apart of course from the actual text of the speech) by the way he kept referring to "in-i-SEE-a-tives" when pronouncing the word "initiatives" when I always say "in-ISH-atives".

I agree on the issue, er, issue...there should also be a SH.

Seems to me that the Lenihans and the Byrnes of this world might be trying a bit too hard to sound erudite?

9:03 a.m.
Blogger laughykate said...

Or, if you live in New Zealand, ush-you.

9:14 a.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

I say in-ish-atives too. Mind you, erudite I am not.
Lk? Really? ush-you, aw noie.
Another thing I've noticed lately is folk saying 'mill-on' and 'bill-on' for million and billion. It's quite odd. Mary Hannafin says it quite a lot. But I think that could just be a regional thing and not a put on.

"ish-u" for me too.

I had noticed the tendency of media types to use 'iss-u' though.

The also refer to Bord Gosh! and Or-T-E!

Blogger laughykate said...

I hear it as ish-u, but apparently we sound like ush-u.

Millon and billon are from the same stable as ve-hick-el. None of that dirty West Brit pronunciation.

Does this affect tissue then?

Blogger fatmammycat said...

Haw at Bord Gosh.
A as Or is pretty common these days, Ord Feis instead of Ard Feis and Or-us On Uch-tor-on for Aras an Uchtarain. We fear the A, knowing full well it will trip us us up with its tricksy flatness and reveal us as the big muckers we really are.
I believe I will rechristen myself as FotMommyCot in keeping with my south side snubbery. Gimmie you're exempt as you're from 'over there' or the 'Norf Syde' as I will doubtless now call it.
Wait Claire, wait! Sorry... Clore! Wait I wanna be in your cool gang.

Blogger fatmammycat said...

Sheepie that is a most excellent point. What is the Ish-ue with tish-ue? If I sneeze with it be a-tiss-ue? Wither the germular whoosh?

10:24 a.m.
Blogger Jo said...

Iss-u and tiss-u are pretty bad in terms of affectation, alright.

There's definitely lots of those RTE ones that get to me, but I can't think of the big one. I must have blocked it out.

This is regional, maybe, but I really hate when people say 'click' instead of clique. And 'clicky'. Arg!

You're absolutely right, coven is much better.

Sorry Jo, I meant 'Yar obsulutely right!'

I used to pronounce cacophony 'ca-ca-fony.' (I sweor to mormolade. The shome of it, the very shome.) Don't even bother asking me how I pronounced 'Ennui' think of a race horse and bare your teeth. I went to school too.

There are popular British pronunciations here in Canada such as "shed-ule" for schedule.
I take it as a way to distinguish themselves from their neighbours to the south.

ish-u of course - but worryingly I know a woman who pronounces Minute - "min-yit"

As an American what I find odd/endearing/crazy-making about Beloved's Belfast accent is when a syllable is added to a single syllable word such as "fil-um" for film and "Jo-EL" for Billy Joel.

I'm not one to talk though. Thanks to Beloved's pointing it out, I've become aware of how I drop in far too many "awesomes" during conversation, giving me away as the California beach babe I am.

Like... language and accents are awesome!

Most 'murkans I know say ish-u. My mom, who is southern to her very marrow, says "srimp" instead of "shrimp" and "srub" instead of "shrub." I never figured that one out, if it's a particularly southern thing or if it's just one of her idiosyncrasies.

My mom-in-law says "warsh" instead of "wash," including in "Warshington, D.C." That will drive you right up a wall and down the other side.

2:52 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

I'll warsh my awesome hands in a min-yit. Ykes, it's a veritable tongue twister.
I know a gal who says Flor-ee-da and coo-ba for cuba, which I naturally pronounce 'que-bah' hmmm, I say sked-ual for schedule. Bah, I'm a honkey tonk country person for sure.

3:32 p.m.
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now if you're remotely Spanish or Latino/a, it makes sense to say Flo-ree-da or Coo-ba.

If you're from Kentucky, you're more likely to call the former "Florr-da" and the latter "Kuh-yew-ba." We can always find a way to omit and add vowels.

Playwright George Bernard Shaw was fond of pointing out that the word, 'ghoti,' could just as well be pronounced, 'fish,' if you followed common pronunciation: 'gh,' as in, 'tough,' 'o,' as in, 'women,' and 'ti,' as in 'nation.

It must take so long saying everything though Grims. Although I must admit a terrible fondness for sing song accents.

Docky, ever try explaining why Sow, bough, cough and bow sound odd to a Spaniard? It takes many rums.

That's funny, James! I always learn something new form your comments.

If somebody were to say tiss-u to me, I'm afraid I'd have to say "Tiss you, yourself you ill-mannered goat-doer! Why don't you wipe you nose, eh? Get yourself a fucking tissue, numbnuts"

You can't let people walk all over you.

Hey Medbh, I am never sure about schedule. It can come out of my mouth as sked-ule or shed-dule or my personal favourite (only cause we coined it in the office- our lives are ruled by the things) - sked-dool-lee.

WOW, that video is some heavy handed tripe!

Since I had no desire for a specifc breed all my dogs have been pound puppies and have been great, loving pets. But it is heartbreaking to see so many wonderful dogs in shelters and know you can't save them all.

More importantly I think it is vital that the animals are given loving homes and that the owners are responsible no matter where they come from. Too many pets end up in shelters when their owners get tired of them or it's no longer convenient or fun.

I agree that irresponsible breeding is a big source of pet overpopulation but instead of going after people who want a specific breed why don't they focus on licensing breeders as so to limit those who, having shelled out a pretty penny for a purebreed, decide to have a few litters to make some money. I bet that many of those unfortunate dogs that end up in shelters come as leftovers from casual breeders.
