Tax Robbery!

Son of a bitch. My annual motor tax renewal form came through the post and it's 60 odd euros more expensive!!! For the same fucking car(!!) that I drive on the same fucking Roads(!!) as I did last fucking year (!!).
What the F?
This must be that green bollocks John Gormley was twittering on about. How exactly does charging people MORE tax save the god damned environment? Who gets the money? This is social blackmail. This is cock rot of the highest order. How does this shit get passed and no one kicks up about it?
My car passed its NCT test, and part of that test was a check for fuel emissions. I had to replace the filter to comply with the government mandated test. So if it was good enough for the fucking NCT test, why less than six months later and I being told I have to pay MORE tax for it's engine size.
You know what? I'm sick to the back teeth of this country for shit like this. They, yes they, decide they're going to do something and BAM, it is so, and we just roll over and let them.
This is claptrap. We already pay through the bloody nose to drive, why are we being penalized further?

It's cause they're cunts.

Oops. Sorry. Thought I was over at Twenty's house. (And it's Friday night here, and swear moderation gets switched off after two glasses of wine.)

I understand your pain, it's so frustrating when stuff like that happens and you don't get to argue it before it become legislation.

It's absolute bollox, I thought it was too do with fuel emissions and not engine size no??
Mine is due in Aug I'd say I am going to get ripped of too. I might ring them and see how much it will cost. Fucking shower of nob jockies.

I guess it's cos despite how much it costs almost every single person in the country has a car.

It's unsustainable really, hence the traffic and petrol problems.

why do i always have to play devils advocate? hmmm

I know!

My road tax last year was an outrageous €67 and then, to add insult to injury, when barrier free tolling is introduced on the M50 I will have to pay nothing each time I use it.

I need a drink.

Sorry couldn't resist! That said, I just shelled out in excess of €600 for a new helmet (DON'T!) because I dropped mine yesterday.

I don't understand why the tax is not on the petrol. I mean if you drive a gas guzzler car, but you only drive 1,000 miles a year, then you are presumably doing less environmental damage than a 'clean' car that drives 50,000 miles. The way to tax emissions is to tax the fuel that goes in the car. Ergo, you use up more fossil fuel, you pay more. Increasing the tax on the car penalises a light user at the same rate as a person that is constantly on the road.

If they want to get cars off the road, then a flat increase in tax for all is not the way to do it.

It's bloody annoying. And quite right Docky. I use public transport regularly and I doubt I drive anything like 1000 miles a year, plus like I said my emissions are within Governmental standards, so why the penalty?

Who the hell is this extra revenue going to? And what, if anything, does it have to do with climate change?

Morgot, even if everyone has a car, why would paying more tax change it?

Ahhh Dr. James do you not think we pay enough tax on petrol? We pay the highest in Europe.

It all boils down to the fact that we had a poxy minister for finance, he was not an accountant nor did he ever hold a real job outside politics. Therefore, he had no experience to equip him to budget for an entire country. And now in spite of his enormous cock ups and the impending recession the solution is to make the public pay. That is why we pay so much road tax, because the fuckers need to make up the deficit in their budget and rather than work harder to find a viable solution that won't cripple the public they take an 11 week holiday. There is no logical explanation for increase in road tax.

Incidentally, I drive a 2.2 ltr diesel, my road tax for the year will be 791 Euro. My car insurance is only 290 Euro. The government are cunts and I am pissed right off.

They-the government- do all sorts of weird shit that makes my brow furrow. Like this new drive to close all pubs, clubs and whatever at the same time. I'm very against that, it's daft. Tossing everyone out onto the streets at the one time is lunacy. Once again cui bono?
And now on the Orla Barry show there's a casual chat about licencing cyclists! I wouldn't be at all surprised if some big wig heard that and thought, 'hey, money spinner'.

Of course if they closed some tax loop holes...The artist's exemption for example. (In theory it is a fine idea - but it should only apply on income up to the average industrial wage say).

Also, wasn't a report released last year which showed that some of the wealthiest people in the country paid absolutely NO income tax.

Everybody should pay their fair share... but for that to happen the govt would have to stop being so generous towards their corporate buddies.

Of course for that to happen, the govt (FF in particular) need to fear the risk of the electorate giving them the old heave-ho next time around.

Oh!

it will put new people off buying large cars and encourage people to share i suppose.

I found an irish company selling electric cars, they're absolutely hideous, but maybe some day they'll be able to make a nice-looking version.

I don't think they have to pay tax.

fucking hell nonny, nearly 800 quid on tax, that's horrendous.

I think mine was 240 or something.

Hah, BA, chance would be a fine thing.

I'm pretty sure technological breakthroughs with regard to electric cars will make them a very viable option in the future, but you can bet your ass they'll find some NEW was to tax us then, aren't our ESB bills going up 30% this year.

Ludicrous Miss Cat.

BA I get what you saying clever people are getting away with millions by peddling the whole artist tax break thing but these are only a handful of people. I mean the average artist, say somebody who writes a book, at a push they may release a book once every two years, maybe get a 10-20 grand up front payment, royalties are minimum so until they are well established writers, which if at all can take years, their earnings are not that fantastic. Same goes for painters and such. By increasing their tax bracket you may achieve nothing other than discouraging them from doing something they love and perhaps a far greater crime depriving the world of a would be masterpiece or even just a good read.

Morgor I know and it's a diesel so economical, get great mileage out of the aul fella. Alas, I will press on, the government won't tell me what car to drive. Vie va le resistance!

Also, the ESB said they are going to offset moneies from their balance sheet to reduce the risk off having to increse ESB bills for customer. Remains to be seen.

At least the ESB have a plan to be independant from non-renewables by 2050 or something.

Took them long enough to come up with the idea though!

Nonny, I wasn't advocating removing the artists exemption all together. As I said in my first comment, it's a fine idea - in theory. What I'm suggesting is applying some means-tested limit. Fair enough my suggestion wasn't perfect - it was just the first thing that came to mind.

I'm sure the intention (when he exemption was first introduced) was to keep artists, such as those you mentioned in your example, off the bread line.

On the other hand, were Bono to pay tax on the portion of his income which is tax exempt I don't imagine he'd be struggling to keep the wolves from the door.

Fuck that, do you want me to walk to Wexford? Carry the cats to the vets? Carry my weekly shop home by ass and cart? What has how much I drive got to do with necessity?

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, I could say that the amount of miles you drive is irrelevant to those who have dictated how much tax you will pay. Be it 100 miles or 1000 miles or 100,000 miles, you still own a car.
Most of us are in the happy position that VRT has actually reduced....you must be driving a beemer FMC
