Vegans bollocks and parental stupidity.

While I understand a person's decision not to eat animal on a moral ground, forcing children to partake of a strict and potentially harmful diet is utter clap trap and in some cases down right cruelty.
Observe from yesterday's Sunday Times,

" A 12-YEAR-OLD girl in Scotland brought up by her parents on a strict vegan diet has been admitted to hospital with a degenerative bone condition said to have left her with the spine of an 80-year-old woman.

Doctors are under pressure to report the couple to police and social workers amid concerns that her health and welfare may have been neglected in pursuit of their dietary beliefs.

The girl, who has been fed on a strict meat and dairy-free diet from birth, is said to have a severe form of rickets and to have suffered a number of fractured bones.

The condition is caused by a lack of vitamin D, which is needed to absorb calcium and is found in liver, oily fish and dairy produce. Decalcification leads to the bones becoming brittle and can cause curvature of the spine.

Dr Faisal Ahmed, the consultant paediatrician treating the child at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow, declined to discuss the specific case. He said, however, that he believed the dangers of forcing children to follow a strict vegan diet needed to be highlighted.

One leading nutritionist, who asked not to be named, said: “In most instances, the parents who are imposing this very restrictive and potentially hazardous diet are not themselves brought up as vegans. They are imposing on their children something . . . which we do not know enough about to know it is safe.”

Jonathan Sher, head of policy at Children in Scotland, an umbrella group representing 400 organisations, said social workers should intervene where a vegan diet was putting children’s health at risk.

Last year, an American vegan couple were given a life sentence for starving their six-week-old baby to death. In 2001 two vegans from west London were sentenced to three years’ community rehabilitation after they admitted starving their baby to death.

Glasgow city council said the incident involving the 12-year-old girl had not been referred to its social work department."

Meanwhile over at the Daily wail, another baby is being fed an entirely ridiculous diet which can only cause obesity and malnutrition. Although I must admit I laughed at the mother's assertion that her daughter was healthy and that she occasionally drank milk or some coke between her meals of chips.
Dear me.
What a bunch of wallys. Here we are in the affluent west and children are dying of starvation and idiocy. It can't be down to lack of information so it must be willful ignorance. I've said it before, some people shouldn't be allowed to reproduce.

Bloody criminals, the vegans and the chip mother.

You can try legislating against stupidity but there are these people that are just so incomprehensibly stupid that we can't even imagine needing a rule outlawing their behaviour until they've thought up their moronic behaviour themselves.

it's unreal Sam. Like I say, it has to be willful ignorance, there's no other excuse.

They should go to jail but they won’t because of the new found love we have for excuse makers. If they were real Vegans they would have know how to supplement that child’s diet. That is down to two things either they didn’t research it enough or it was an intentional case of neglect and their harping on about being Vegans to justify their bastardlyness. Imagine the state the poor kid was in. Who the fuck do they think they are anyway? They are her parents they don’t own her, it is their job to ensure her diet is balanced not tell her what to eat the fuckers. I am a vegimitarian, they thought of eating meat makes me hurl but there is no way I would deny my child something that is widely perceived to be good for you. Though I’d probably gag for a while I’d cook it for them. And I am not an ill inform newbie like I am sure her parents are I never ever had meat.

And see that other woman she looks like a traveller, if for nothing else she should be shot for having that fringe. I’d say she brags to her friends that she was in the paper cause she spoils her child.

'I've tried giving her healthy food but she won't eat it,' Miss Boswell said. 'She will eat a bit of what we're having, say spaghetti bolognese, and she had a massive bowl of mashed potato the other day.

'She might have a banana sometimes, or yoghurt, but she won't touch vegetables - she picks them up and throws them.'

I mean, jesus on a pogo stick. I can see the future.
'I tried making her go to school but she just wouldn't go, I brought her to the door but she wouldn't go in so I took her home again.'

I notice the contrast between the American couple and British couple starving their children to death - one gets a justified life sentance, while the other gets 3 years 'community rehabilitation', whatever that is.

I fucking despair at the state of our society.

I was watching a program on the discovery channel yesterday about people who disagree with darwins theory of evolution.

I think this is the whole survival of the fittest coming in again.

People who are too stupid to raise children accidentally kill them.

Yeah, that's really mature Nonny. We should just kill people because they have a fringe you don't like. That's so typical of the attitudes of you young people these days. You've got a few chickens in your back garden and you think the world owes you a favour. Well done, you superhero new age hen owner you. A round of applause for Nonny folks!

It's ridiculous forcing children to follow such a strict diet when they're so young, it's not like they chose it. It's forced on them. And in this case the child has really paid a high price for their parent's beliefs. Jesus, never having cheese, I can't even fathom it.

to think; you need a license for a fucking dog, and yet any two fucksticks can raise and ruin as many children as they like...

And fringes are rarely a good idea, so if death has to be visited upon a few to sort out the many, well I say bring it on

I think very few women can pull off fringes, and the buggering things often seem like a good idea, right up until the moment you get one. Fortunately I learned this lesson in my twenties and I have rapid growing hair.

Nonny does make a good point about supplements and research, though. (Not about the fringe - some people can and do pull it off. Not me, evidently, though it did look great in my 20's.)

It sounds like All they had to do was give the kid a good quality D supplement and let her get some animal fats (cheese)into her diet - though that may be oversimplifying it... I'm not a vegan, couldn't live without cheese and eggs, but you can eat a healthy, well-rounded diet without meat. And given the choice of factory-farmed meat and no meat at all, you are better off eating no meat at all. I try hard not to preach, but i'm reading a lot about the factory farm system and yeeesh. It amazes me people aren't going vegetarian in droves.

Quote Twenty Major.

Touch of the old pot calling the kettle black methinks. So Twenty, you are a bastion of "maturity" I take it. To me you're more of an angst ridden teen who get's a fit of the giggles from using the word "cunt" quite liberally on your excuse for a blog.

That aside,
I understand that you are trying to stir the pot FMC and encourage debate, but these people I am quite sure, are unrepresentative of vegans.

There are baskets cases everywhere, and us ranting about it on your blog, wont reduce their numbers.

Yep Andraste, vegetarian sure, but vegan? Who could possible live without cheese?

Anonymous I"m just commenting on a story. I think it's daft when parents force their children ora are forced by their children into shitty diets.

Vegans are mostly mentalists.
Children need dairy products as much as air to grow. The doctor quoted was right in that no one has ever studied what happens to kids on that diet. I doubt that supplements are sufficient.

Yeah, I can't imagine a vegan diet is a good idea for kids, although it is totally possible to get all your requirements on a vegan diet, but seriously there are way more kids damaged by diets heavy in fatty meats than those without.

I can smell the kitchen of a steak house from my place ... mouth watering on to keyboard! And I only have brown rice and the makings of a vaguely interesting stir fry, bah.

Friends of mine went to a vegan wedding a few years back - I thought that was really rude of the bride and groom. We'll stuff our principles down your necks (literally) we will.

That story is horrendous. Is it really possible for people to be that bloody stupid or is it willful cruelty I don't know. I'm a vegetarian and have been since I was just 11 but if I have children I'll ensure they eat meat as it's the best and easiest way to ensure they get protein when they're young. If they decide to become vegetarian once they're older I'll support that choice obviously. Being veggie hasn't stunted my growth or anything, I'm the tallest of my siblings. But then the most important years for development are probably from 0-10 when I was eating meat.

Why you lot...that's just sensible talk! I won't have it.

Is there any greater smell in the world than fried onions? I don't even like fried onions, the texture is so slimy, but the smell, dear lord.

Fried onions on roundy smoked cheese from Suerquin emmm.

Sheesh

That makes no sense. In fact its logically ridiculous. Rude! How could it possibly by rude for them to stand by their principles on their wedding day. It's their wedding so why not their choices - why should they have your choices shoved down their throats at their own wedding? If you believe that the killing of animals or the consumption of any animal byproduct is morally wrong, why would you choose your wedding day, the day when you supposedly set the foundations of your married life, to compromise that belief? Why not a little tolerance and open mindedness, a little adventure even. Try something new. You might be surpised. There will be plenty of weddings with steak.

Now, a wedding with no alchohol, thats a different matter altogether!

I don't think it is fair to feed people exclusively the foods that you only eat yourself at a public gathering. And (using the same logic!) I also don't think it fair to have only meat and no fish or veggie options. Weddings are generally made up of people with different ages and preferences, and I think it is good manners to try to cater for a broad spectrum.

10:47 p.m.
Blogger John Mc said...

By that logic it would unfair to subject people of another religion to the ceremony of a different religion, (would it also be unfair to subject everyone to a wedding band that only covers 70's disco because some people prefer classical music?). You go to a wedding knowing that it will be as the bride and groom wishes it. Would you object to their religious choices or their moral choices, because not eating meat is not just a lifestyle choice for many people, but a moral choice - just as the religion or lack of religion you get married under is. You are asking these people to be party to violence, no matter what way you slice and dice meat processing is a cruel process. Just because you can live with that doesn't mean they should. Also, most meat eaters do eat plant based foods, so they are not being forced to eat something that they don't eat anyway. If the food is shite it's not because its vegan, it's because it's shite. Thats a different problem. It's perfectly possible to have amazing vegan food.

For the record I am not a vegan. 99.999% vegetarian though.

Ha - as I typed, I did think about religion and music in weddings! And much as I have a soft spot for 70s disco, it has its (limited) place - mainly around 1:00am, I think!

I guess our difference in standpoints comes down to your seeing it as more of a moral choice; and my seeing as personal lifestyle choice.
