Shannon Matthews, alive well and never kidnapped.

There can be hardly any more pitiful sight than that of a distraught parent pleading for the return of a missing child. I was in the gym when I saw 32 year old Karen Matthews on the news for the first time, I remember seeing the photo of Shannon her missing nine year old daughter and thinking 'poor little thing'.
Dammit I defended Karen Matthews at one point saying that just because she was less photogenic and less well spoken than the McCanns didn't make her ordeal less painful.
Guess I was wrong.
For almost a month Shannon remained vanished, whole her mother and her step father whipped up a public storm, getting t-shirts printed up and giving interviews. CCTV footage of poor Shannon leaving her swimming class were released, more photos of a shy chubby faced young girl were flashed across the screen.
Police found Shannon on March 14, hidden in the base of a divan bed at the maisonette home of computer programmer Donovan in Batley Carr, a mile from her home. Donovan is the uncle of Karen Matthews 22 year old partner Craig Meehan. Karen dumped Meehan last week after he was charged with 11 child porn offences unconnected to Shannon.
It now transpires that Matthews was planning to leave Meehan all along and move in with Donavan, that Donavan had probably picked Shannon up on the day of her disappearance and that Karen Matthews, the sobbing distraught mother, had known where Shannon was all along, from day one.

"But detectives are ALSO probing claims that associates of the Matthews family tried to extract money from the Maddie McCann fund – and the possibility of a kidnap plan based on an episode of Channel 4 show Shameless."

Donovan, a computer programmer, is on remand awaiting trial accused of kidnapping Shannon and holding her against her will at his flat.

Due to face a court in November, he is on suicide watch in prison after trying to kill himself.

Last Friday, Amanda Hyett, 25, and her mother, Alice Meehan, 49, were also arrested. Mrs Hyett was held on suspicion of assisting Donovan.

It's unreal. What a family. How on earth did Karen Matthews think she could get away with this? SHe's saying now that she wanted to leave Meehan and that on the day Shannon 'vanished' she had packed clothes but chickened out at the last minutes. This was all about her, her wants, her needs, her life.
What sort of woman put her friends neighbours and family through the hellish anguish of thinking a chid was abducted and possibly murdered. How could she get up day after day and hand out t-shirts with her daughter's face printed on it to people offering help and solace. How could she get in front of television cameras and sob and makes emotional appeals knowing what she knew? What kind of person does that?
In any event this shameless harridan has destroyed not just her life but of those around her. Then family are shattered, friends are bewildered and angry, the powerful little community, all those people who gave time and money to help find Shannon have been slapped in the face. And for what? So that Karen Matthews could leave her minging boyfriend and move in with the next in a long line of men. She's a mother to five children for god's sake. Some people really do take the biscuit and I hope the police and the courts absolutely throw the book at this horrible woman.

Sorry, this wretch is the mother of seven children. Thanks Docky.

Unfortunately, this a common scenario being played out on neglected housing estates and tower blocks in every British city and town. Britain has always been a socially segregated society, with it's class systems going back infinitum, think of the Victorian working classes, social depravity, squalour, the gin crisis etc.

The "under classs" is still there, poverty striken, poorly educated, no morality, no sense or right or wrong.

There are now signs in our own large cities in Ireland of the same things, violent hoodied youths, no go neighbourhoods, etc etc.

Ordinary "decent folk" those of lucky not to nave been dealt the shitty end of the stick, will continue to be horrified by these types of stories, but the fact is that these people by a comination of neglect, circumstance and birth are pre destined to end up on the scrapheap of life.

Yes these people are scum, I heard someone say the other day, you need a licence to own a TV or a dog, yet any retard who can get an erection can have kids.

Anonymous said "The "under classs" is still there, poverty striken, poorly educated, no morality, no sense or right or wrong." The bit about "poverty stricken" is not true any longer - the benefits system in the UK ensures that - and visit any sink estate in the UK and you will find the 52" flat screen tv and all the latest tech gear, the kids will have the latest trainers/jacket/football shirt etc. so poverty is not the issue here.
I think this family saw the McCann fund growing in zeros, and media stardom galore, and in their stupidity thought "we'll have a bit of this" - it might even still happen for them if the tabloids offer to "buy" their stories. They complained during their ca mpaign that they were not getting the same sort of public sympathy and coverage as the McCanns because of the difference in looks and class- I this this may have been due more the the public smelling a rat. They have done a great disservice to parents of genuine missing children.

As someone who has spent time in the UK I would have to disagree about poverty not being an issue.
It really is an issue, this is a society in serious meltdown.
I agree that what they have done is shocking and inexcusable, but not surprising, anyone who knows the social breakdown in the UK will vouch for this.
Remember Jamie Bulger, ETC ETC

I just am staggered she thought she's get away with it? What was the rest of her plan? When was the child supposed to resurface? How far would she have been willing to go?

You can't make this shit up.
What horrors did her daughter endure while she was with that scumbag?

After reading a bit more about this case and the 'step father's' arrest for child porn and hi enjoyments of 'cuddles' the question might be what horrors did Shannon suffer BEFORE she was left with another unrelated male for almost a month.
Seriously, that Karen Matthews makes me sick to my stomach.

just to clarify - according to the times, she has seven children with five fathers, not five children. has she no control over her own libido?

Every society has its share of scum and criminals. Some of the most successful and respectable people come from grindingly poor backgrounds. These people are greedy and stupid and were prepared to use a little girl of nine for their own purposes. They should be locked away. Who know what the kid has endured. I hope she gets some loving foster parents who give her a fair chance.
And anon, UK society in meltdown? What total bollocks! It has it's problems, but it's still a country where a flood of immigrants want to live in.

Shebah: To be fair to Anon, UK society is on a downward spiral.
But I do agree with you on the poverty issue - it is only in extremely rare circumstances that someone is simply unable to pull themselves out of poverty in the UK - rather it can be ascribed to unwillingness / laziness and the ever-prevailing sense of entitlement.

You weren't the only one FMC. But the only one to mention it with good grace.
Shannon's mother was the one who derided the middle class mother. Envy is soooo unattractive.

well then she must smear her face in envy every morning...

BTW I'll bet a pound to a penny that these parents have themselves been abused as children.

It's vile to think she would put her daughter through this ordeal for her own gains. She's completely destroyed her own life in the process. Stupid selfish woman.

Hmmm, in a strange way this case reminds me of the grandmother and mothers who were prosecuted last year for making their grandchildren/ daughters beat the crap out of each other, while taping it for sport. Absolute disregard for the needs of the children while pursuing their entitlement to entertainment/ having their financial ''needs''taken care of.

God I remember those vicious bitches, I posted about them at the time, the poor little fellow/toddler was crying and didn't want to fight anyone, but they insisted, goading him on. Of course in their version of events they were just 'toughening him up' or something equally as horrible.
Some people just shouldn't have children, simple as.

I know FMC, the mind boggles at their justification for such cruelty.

What a disgusting woman. How could she do that - this story is unbelievable. She needs locking up for a long time. Maybe then her children will have a chance. She's poison.

She certainly is Sam, and it will be interesting to hear her justifications.

I can't get over two things, one - that not all her children have bene taken from her yet (as far as I know only three have) and two - that she got the idea from an episode of Shameless. Is she right in the head??

Oh and FMC - did the marathon in 4 hours 40 minutes! Slower than I wanted but made a few rookie errors on the day...

Still can't sign in Lou, but congratulations! That's very very good. How do your legs feel? How was yesterday? What rooky mistakes? Inquiring fatcats want to hear all about it!

Blogger Lou said...

Legs could be worse, but stairs are not my friend at the moment! It's mostly the front of my thighs, but wore MBT's in work and I think it helped...

Yesterday was grand apart from Heathrow T5 shennanigans, but I'd had enough white wine and french bread not to care! I'm actually stiffer today...

One rookie error was using gels I'd never used before. I was used to the lighter ones that you don't need to take water with, but I ended up buying power gels in Paris that you need to drink with, and they made me feel really ill. After the apple one with caffiene I had to slow right down because I felt VERY nauseous... Also I wore a bumbag type of thing to carry the gels and hotel card and stuff, had never worn it running before and it hurt my lower back.

I'll do better next time - just a bit annoyed because all the stuff I've read says not to change anything for the actual event, but I did anyway! D'oh...

Conditions were nice though, cold and not too windy, and the crowds were cool. It's nice having your name shouted!

7:17 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

Ah, luckily I was warned not to try or test out anything on the day itself so I was super careful about that. Jelly babies I found were less sick making than the gels, which I find to be a bit hard to swallow or digest.
But well done, that is a marvelous accomplishment and I'm most impressed by the time. I hope you had a cocktail or two to celebrate after.

7:22 p.m.
Blogger Lou said...

Hehe, I had those Jelly Belly beans - they're called 'sports beans' but I ate them all before the marathon because they were so nice! MUST practice restraint next time...

Thanks - and I most certainly did! Had to make up for a shocking Friday night in Paris, stuffed full of pasta and sober as a judge, lol...

I'll bet the writers for Shameless are going to get sacked. Company Pictures will just turn up on this estate with a crew and start filming.

I blame the [insert anyone but the culprits here] for this.

They should cut off their electricity and do a book drop, possibly coupled with reading lessons taught by sky-writing.

And just how far is Limerick from this again?

10:49 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

It WAS one of the thories that they nicked the idea from Shameless, although think the police are trying to move away from that now. She- the mother has been arrested- so I'm pretty sure a lot will emerge over the next day or so. I would be very surprised if Karen Matthews didn't face jail time for this.
As for Limerick, that was shocking. I read about the young fellow being dumped in a shallow grave earlier, barely had his life begun and it was over.
Life is cheap, it really is.

And how long will it be until the kids taken away are returned to her custody and that of whatever moron she's managing to shack up with next? Has this woman actually been married to any of the fathers? Perhaps things are different in the UK, but it seems to me social class is only used as an excuse anywhere. I grew up in the southern U.S. in distressed circumstances, and yet I've still managed to not a) go around killing people, b) sell my kid off into prostitution for drug money, c) live on the dole, or d) embrace the Columbine syndrome that says anytime there's ANY excuse to get on TV, do your make-up and run at the nearest camera. Popular culture shoves ignorance, shallowness, and materialism down everyone's throat 24/7, and no one wants to make a value judgment about people like poor Shannon's slutty incubator for fear of being labeled intolerant prudes. Well, we're reaping what we've sewn, aren't we? Let's at least hope they keep the kids far from this whole family, and just maybe, MAYBE they'll have a fighting chance.

This is all indicative of the coarsening of society, the decline in standards, it's interesting to note the comments about this "woman" having so many kids by different fathers. Sinead O'Connor has the maternal situation, but becuase she is wealthy, no one dares wag the moral finger in her direction.

For the record, I think any woman who has so many kids by difernt fathers is a morally bankrupt, irresponsible person.

These people are scum, and there are MILLIONS of them, if you don't believe me, have a good look around the next time your out and about.

She was in court earlier, charged with child negligence and withholding information. Unreal, her neighbours are incensed, as you can imagine, and her three remaining children have been taken into care. What a mess.

Absolutely unbelievable - how this odious woman ever believed for a second she could get away with it is beyond belief. Approaching the McCann fund just shows the sickening greed that was the backround to this whole sorry affair. My gut instinct tells me this whole thing was about money, be it from selling their story, and donations from the public etc.
This woman as destroyed her life - those of her kids have probably been destroyed just by being unlucky enough to have sprung from this vile woman and one of the 5 guys who got her up the duff and then disappeared.
He situation is in a way a reflection of a sizeable part of British society - the more kids she has, the bigger the benefit payout every fortnight. Even lookin at that woman has me on the verge of physical sickness - to think I felt sorry for her.
Rotten to the core...unbelievable stuff.
Excuse the rant, but this is the first time i've heard the version of events blogged here and it just leaves me angry, sad, bemused...
