motivation for fatcats and possibly for chumlies of Fatcats!

Exercise? I should have, but I was here instead. Note the sun shine!

Top of the afternoon to you Chumlies. And I hope you are having a splendid weekend. The weather here is unnaturally sunny and bright, hitting at one point 17 degrees as the paramour and I drove along some bloody cliff top or other in the wilds of the Wicklow mountains. Somehow or other we managed to completely miss the Hellfire club, then we ended up driving up, up and up some more, until eventually we came back down into some village and then we decided bugger the hellfire club, so we took ourselves off to Johnny Fox's Pub (the higest in Ireland it claims but I'd wager the Blue Light is higher) for a much deserved lunch.
Why am I telling you this? Why only to say nowt in terms of exercise was done, but the swordfish steak was terrific. I will walk to the video store and back shortly, and that's about 9k in total, which will be exactly how much exercise this fatcat will be preforming today.
However the week wasn't a complete loss.

Sunday- wet and soggy and also VINDY. Daunted by outdooriness I took myself off to the gym and proceeded to half kill myself with the following.
18kx10x4 shoulder presses. Now these are lighter than what I would do in a push press, but because there is no bend in the legs or little jump there is no momentum so after about eight of these it gets tiring. By the second set my shoulders are protesting. and the following two sets are annoyingly painful and slower with some cursing and foot stanping.
To compile my misery I lie flat on one of the benches and carry on with 8kx10x4 dumbell bench presses. Ow motherfucking ow on the last set, again with some arm trembling and a squeaky eek from me when I actually thought my arm was going to give out.
Now, one leg on the bench, 12.5kx10x 3 one armed rows. This I find easy and probably could have gone up to 15k on each arm, but I knew what was coming next so I didn't bother killing myself, next week though I'm going to maximise my strength and use the bigger weight.

What was coming next.
Hit the rowing machine with gusto. Rowed a nice 8k in forty-two and a half minutes.

Stretching stretching, come on, stretch. Shower and home.
A nice set up to the week ahead.

Monday and tuesday nowt really but about 5k walks on both days.

Wednesday- In a fit of temper I went off and hit up a 15k run. It was sunny and it was beautiful and when I came back I was in good humour. Yay for running.

Thursday- Off to the gym I went. Push press- 18k x10 x3
Bicep curls, 8k x10 x3
Dumbell press, 8k x10x3 the last set was slower, and the last rep was wobbly, but we did it Melvin.
40 pull ups on the grav, 30k counter balance, broad grip and over hand, working the back a lot. But it was good and I only said eeeeeeeeeeek on the last few reps.
And then chumlies I went off to cycle 20k while watching Home and Way and Location Location Location. Huzzah. Although the recliner bikes are the devil's smegma.
Then I had a shower, after which a lady told me to move away from the weighing machine while she weighed herself. Which was odd.

Yesterday I didn't do a tap apart from work, and today, well it was supposed to be running, but that was cancelled-yes I'm looking you CG, then there was supposed to be walking, but that too fell by the wayside when a seafood lunch was on the table instead.
Oh well. Next week will be better.

Mmmmm, the Blue Light! Speaking of Motivation for fatcats (and possibly for chumlies of Fatcats) what kind of music could you recommend for those long sessions when shuffle just won't cut it anymore? You mentioned Paul Oakenfold a while back, but I'm unsure! Is my fear misplaced?

On the subject of workouts, I was doing a stellar job in the gym this morning until my current love interest appeared, who after a great start to things is now posing a big fat question mark in my head. So, goodbye 'zone' and hello thoughts of doubt and general skittishness. There was no going back to things after he went to catch up with his friends, so addled was I!!

I'll make up for it with a good 40 laps of the pool this evening, I promise...no, please! Don't hit me for being so weak and school-girly!! *cowers in corner*

I quite like the Ministry Of sound classics-especially cd 3, Paul Oakenfold greatest hits and remixes and various other on the go soundtracks I make up myself from dance and 'rawk' tunes. It makes the pain less so somehow.
You must tell me more of this love interest, is he deeelicious?

This week was killer. I did a super-slow 20-minute run Monday, which, after being sick for a couple weeks, was more than enough to have me winded and falling over. Tuesday I walked, doing the incline thing on the treadmill until my buns burned and my lungs tried to explode out of my chest. Wednesday, nothing. Thursday, I walked the 5 miles to and from campus, most of which was on ice (we had snow, then rain, then freezing rain, on top of 6-8in. of snow, which made slush, which then re-froze solid). Imagine the rocky side of a mountain, but frozen and relatively horizontal. All of those stabilizing muscles on the outside and inside of my thighs needed a day off yesterday. Today, I did 2 miles in 20 minutes, and now I need a nap. One of these days I'll get my lungs completely cleared out and functioning again.

As for music, I usually use a mix, but when I'm anticipating a long workout I use Radiohead. The momentum is more helpful for me than kick-ass rock. New album especially good for this.

A much better week for rabbits than we've seen in a while.

Stayed home from work Monday, so was able to get 30 minute of elliptical, lunges, squats, etc.

Tuesday nothing, but Wednesday managed a good half hour of elliptical and the usual lunges, weights (bicep/tricep curls), and crunches.

Nothing Thursday or Friday but about a mile walk each day.

Today - elliptical (honestly, it's really all I do since we don't have a treadmill), bike, all the other usual stuff. Tomorrow, same.

Looking into buying a barely used treadmill from a friend that will JUST fit in between the elliptical and bike. It'll be nice to mix things up with that once in a while. I love the elliptical, but you need variety...

Yes he IS deelicious, and nice and normal and not unemployed etc etc! As I'm sure many will agree, a good man is hard to find, let alone one that can set your heart a-thumping and your gym psyche all out of tune. I may (and EVERYONE agrees with me) be reading into the whole thing too much because I'm so taken with him. And apparently the fact that three days have gone by since our last substantial date/meeting took place does not mean he's changed his mind!

In any case, I've decided to put off all thoughts on the matter till he contacts me again....or Wednesday, whichever comes first; this should help mightily with my review/audit/grilling on Tuesday-glark!

an all-around good week. spent monday, wednesday, and friday doing a 'program of 3's' where i use the crossramp until i hit at least 30 minutes, 300 calories, and 3.0 miles. plus i vary the resistance and incline to make sure i'm acutally working, switching from forward to reverse, and trying to keep the strides/minute above 140.

tuesday, thursday, and friday are lifting days for me - i'm a weakling, so i can't lift much. BUT in some exercises i've started to increase the weights. yippee!

i also decided to talk myself into yoga. i don't go in for the chanting, let's talk about our third eye crap, so i was nervous. turns out the yoga instructors at my gym are sadists - every last one of them. tuesday i did 'yoga for athletes' which is an ass-kicking hour and a half long class, and then showed up the next day for 'level 2' yoga.... i couldn't walk without pain the rest of the day and well into thursday, but still it felt great. today i did a basic yoga class, and even she wouldn't let us get away with going easy. i swear, there's a little memnoch in everyone there.

the plan for tomorrow is to hop in the pool, and just see how many laps i can do.

I haven't the faintest idea how we managed it. But manage it we did. Are you sure the blue light isn't higher? It seem pretty bloomin' high to me.

I must say every one has had a pretty decent week, good running, more distance, more weights, power yoga, eyeing deeelicious boys up. Nice. If the weather stays like it is I will probably attempt a 25 k run this week, which will be my longest run out since the marathon.
I still can't do a hand stand, but I am getting closer. Not much closer, I still fall over, but closer.

Got to the pool four times for thirty lengths each time. Did the freestyle equivalent of attempting to sprint for most of yesterday's session (30% because I wanted to, 70% i had friends coming for dinner and I had yet to get to the supermarket) and today feel like a truck has gently driven over me.
Other than that, a gentle meander around the park yesterday which doesn't really count and a late night steaming hour long walk due to being in a FILTHY mood and it was better i took it out on the pavement and not on the furniture or the plates.
I do wish someone would invent a waterproof ipod, though.

Not a good week for me. I have buried myself in James Joyce and slacked a good deal on the body maintenance this week.

Gym once for a desultory half hour on the stair-climber. Heart not in it at all at first but felt smashing afterwards and went on the machines for a further half hour.

That was it though. In about 20 minutes I'm taking the girls to the day-carey bit in the gym while I try and get a good half hour on the eliptical.
A pizza lunch for their Saturday treat and then home. Babysitter starting at 4 - we're going to Santa Barbara for an art show for which I could well do without. Bothered by a bit of insomnia lately and really would just prefer to stay at home with the girls in my jammas.

I think not exercising as much makes me sleep more poorly. it's been hellish bad this week - not more than 4 hours on any one night and by 11am most days I'm cream-crackered. Still, it could be worse so I'll quit grumbling.

Have a great weekend all!

I've been down to only 2 visits to the gym each week. We've gotten a record 135cm of snow so far this year. Bleurgh.

Only managed to get to the gym twice, so the trainer punished me by making me do loads of upper body in the second session. Sadist.

Went skiing (or more accurately falling down a mountain) on Sunday. Gripping poles very tightly in sheer terror is a great workout for the arms.

this (http://www.venganza.org/) is always my response to the evolution v. creationism debate.

it shouldn't be a debate. the issue with creationism, however, is that you can't disprove it by any scientific means. however, neither can it be proven itself. it's quite the sticky quagmire over here, especially living in a bright red state.

I am so tired today it's not real:

Sunday- snowboarding all day.To make things interesting, we took of the boards and did a 20 minute traverse across the top ridge of Alpine Meadows to hit some fresh little travelled powder on the back side. The traverse was in knee deep snow so it was a a bitch. On the 3rd run we screwed up, bottomed out on a flat part and had a 45 minute trudge through waist deep snow to get to the nearest lift. Jaysus we were bollixed that evening. Fun though.

Tuesday - hour wattage training on the bike, followed by a 20 minute easy run.

Wednesday - 1 hr Power Yoga.

Friday - 40 K bike ride, with some serious riders, so it was at pace and hilly. I felt great, the wattage training paid off, I was hitting the hills in much bigger gears than a few weeks back. When I got home I immediately ran 3 miles to get used to getting from the bike to the run. My legs were like jelly, but aerobically I felt good. HOWEVER I am useless today, pretty wiped out, and I have another 40k ride tomorrow.

FMC, I will need to send you some photos of my neigbourhood - just because I'm in love with it.
I walked up on my favourite hill today, then I slided into my local pub, beer...wine... read the newswpaper.... and now I've talked for about 3 hours on Skype with friends.

What did people do before the internet and Skype? A post from you?

Oh creationism, just another load of ridiculous mumbo jumbo and wishful thinking. An obfuscation and a vain attempt to upload a religion onto our unwilling selves. I don't get too upset about it, most sane people don't buy what creationists are selling.

John Mc, you win this week's, 'my god that had to hurt' award.' I doff my cap to you.

I like to recommend to cat lovers that they swap stories, like, the funniest thing your cat ever did, or how far you go to please/spoil your cat, or what's the weirdest thing your cat does.

The weirdest thing my male cat Darcy does is try to eat plastic bags. Every time I come back from grocery shopping he jumps on the plastic grocery bags and tries to chew and swallow pieces of them. I always snatch them away and I make sure I never leave them around. Hey, maybe I should let him eat plastic. Maybe that way when he poops it'll come out in little plastic bags and I won't need a litter box. LOL, Clare Higgins, www.modernartcats.com

Hi FMC!
My excercise for this week:
Sunday race up 3 rock mountain in a blistering gale of hailstones. Deadly!
Monday Gym in the morning. 8 mile run at night.
Tuesday Swim lesson and gym workout in morning. Speedwork with athletics club at night.
Wednesday Gym in morning and 10 mile hilly run at night.
Thursday off! Met science bloke who told me that in order to get faster I have to build muscle. So I shall...
Friday 19 mile run with more effort than normal.
Saturday 1 hour run.
Today was a duathlon (run/bike/run). Just for fun. I'm useless on a bike!!
Training all going well for Rotterdam marathon so with a few more massages my ropey glutes and hamstrings should be much better.
Cheers FMC sounds like you had a lovely day at Johnny Foxes. We need those kinda days to just chill... I'm jealous!

I think you and John might have to tussle over the 'my god that had to hurt' award. Well done missus!
Now, it will be interesting to see how on earth you're going to put on muscle when you run such long distances but I have complete faith in you. I suppose you'll just have to lift heavier weights, eat more food, and get plenty of protein, but you must burn up such huge amounts of energy. You make me feel decided lazy!
Oh the pub was really lovely and the food was terrific. I had swordfish steak for the first time and it was delicious and surprisingly 'meaty'. Charming bar, I loved the chamber pots hanging from the ceiling. But the next time I go there I plan to have at least a pint or seven.

Yeah the weights it is FMC. I've been told to do it by two completely different people (after physiological tests) so I thought I'd give it a go. I used to lift light weights lots of times, now I plan to live heavier weights less times. (I'm not one of those super-skinny runners either, it has something to do with my running economy).
I had swordfish a few times in Turkey. Thought it was like pork...

Daisy Mae, sometime -when you have time- you're going to have to explain to me what red/blue state really means. I know it's conservative v liberal, but are they really that vastly different? Forgive my ignorance in advance.

ah fmc, no worries. i still don't understand the ins and outs of our political system. to reduce it down to the easiest of levels, you have two major parties: republicans (red) and democrats (blue). we strongly discourage third party spoilers. generally republicans are more conservative than democrats and vice versa, but it takes all kinds.

right now we're in our primary elections and caucuses, where the candidate running for president will be chosen for each party. although in the case of the democrats, it may be a toss-up between obama and clinton, which means a committee at the democratic national convention would then decide the best candidate. (see in america, our voices don't really count if they go against the interests of certain political figures, big business, etc). in november, we'll toddle off to the voting booths and cast our vote for president. ideally, the person with the most votes wins, but as the last 2 elections have shown us, that isn't always the case.

if a state clearly votes democratic, it's considered a blue state (generally places like washington, california, new york, wisconsin, and the like). thus, a state that votes mostly republican is a red state (like texas, alabama, montana, etc).
