Abortion Miss D update.

"The girl at the centre of the 'Miss D' case has won her High Court battle to be allowed to travel to Britain to have an abortion.

The judge in the case said this afternoon he holds the view firmly and unequivocally that there is "no statutory or constitutional impediment" which would prevent her from going to the UK.

The 17-year-old girl is 18 weeks pregnant with a baby which has a fatal brain disorder and won't live for more than a few days following birth."

Well well well, I'm glad to see some sense prevailed at last.

Indeed it has - until the next time this happens or we run out of letters in the alphabet to describe these cases.

Once again it's not ok to raise the issue of abortion in this country, but it's fine to bundle the problem off to the UK. Disgraceful...

I am living far from the land at the moment... From my reading of the blogosphere it seemed that perhaps there was an element of pragmatism in the good people of Ireland, concerning this specific case with anencephaly. Then I saw a picture on the Irish Times website of the pro-life protesters with their placards... and I realized, that as say, the most we'll ever do in Ireland is export the problem. I guess we'll never get rid of the SPUC heads - I still find it hard to believe that anyone could defend terminating a pregnancy which has no chance of life. What the f@@@ do these people think is the benefit of carrying to term and giving birth to an anencephalic fetus, for the baby to die in days, (and that is at best)??? Does the anencephalic benefit from growing its pathetic and grossly deformed self up to the expiration date? Am not of the opinion that abortion on demand is ok - far from it - but in the case of anencephaly, the appropriateness of abortion seems pretty black and white to me. Poor kid. Glad she can travel now, sorry she had to go through this sh!te.

Glinda, you're spot on. Not only were there pro-choice and 'pro-life' supporters with placards. But one group sent in someone to hand her a petition supporting her ... a member of the other cadre stopped her on her way to the toilet (during the proceedings) to make their case.

No-one, no matter the circumstances, she should have been subjected to that - even the petition of support - she is going through enough already.

Ah the pro-lifers and their jolly placards, all sporting soft glow images of perfectly formed fetus', natch, nothing remotely like what Miss D was incubating, but let's not let a fact or two get in the way of a bit of shaming.

I presume that the whole hoo-ha wasn't really about Ms D's right to travel etc... but about the state paying for that travel and that termination? So now, is the tax payer paying for SPUCites to take these sad cases, AND paying for travel and termination for this poor girl? Why the Hell can't the service be provided here - by the tax payer???? What is it? What exactly IS the reason? It's too Orwellian - UK termination good, Ireland termination bad??? My heart goes out to the poor girl, poor baby, poor family.

FMC, thank you muchly, but crikey it's so true about the camera adding 10 pounds. That said, there were three on me. :) Last week, I honestly didn't look that big off camera, but this week I'm expanding at a Violet-in-Willy-Wonka rate. Less than 8 weeks to go... eek.

Re the Miss D case, there's a great article at the Cedar Lounge about it:

Whatever about the SPUCites and their horrific placards, you should see the ludicrous letters from the pro-lifers in the Irish Times over the last few days. Blood-boiling stuff.
